In the scriptures, it is mentioned that if you have taken initiation with the Shadakshara Shri Rama mantra, you cannot take any other mantra afterwards, as the scriptures view it as a disrespect to the Shri Rama mantra. As in the entire Sanatan Dharma, no mantra is even considered as equal or superior to Shri Rama mantra.
If someone takes the Sri Ram Mantraraja Shadakshara (the six-syllable mantra) from a Vaishnava and uses any other mantra, they will surely go to Raurau Naraka.
(-Narad Panchratra Pushkar Samhitā)
If someone, with great effort and knowledge of the essence of mantras, uses any other mantra while possessing the Mantraraj of Supreme Lord Shri Rama, it is considered a greatest sin.
(-Narad Panchratra Shankarshan Samhita)
According to the sage Lomash, those who take the Rama mantra and then take another mantra will not be redeemed until both the sun and moon exist. It is difficult to escape from hell until that time. Those who desire to take other mantras with the Rama mantra are committing a sin, and the givers of such mantras will also go to hell.
(-Srimad Bhushundi Ramayana, Sage Lomash said)
Tulsidas Ji was not an ordinary person; rather, he was incarnation of Maharishi Valmiki himself, who appeared in the Kali Yuga to easily spread the story of Lord Rama to the masses.
(Bhavishya Purana, Pratisarga 4.20)
In the Bhavishyottar Purana, after telling the entire story of Sri Rama, Lord Bhutabhavan Shankara says to Goddess Parvati – “O Parvati! Maharishi Valmiki will become Tulsidas in Kali Yuga and will translate this Rama Katha into vernacular (awadhi) language.”
In the Vedas, it is well-known that the Guru is the medium to know Lord Rama. Without a Guru, one cannot truly understand Lord Rama.
Bhagvan Shri Ram says to Sri Hanuman ji: When a Shishya meditate on my unchanging and imperishable form through the path given by the Guru, then one will surely achieve Sayujya Mukti, like the insects changing into the bee.
(-Shukla Yajurved Muktikopanishad 1.24)
—Here, a clear discussion is taking place of a guru-sishya tradition where the central focus is Lord Shri Rama himself. In this tradition, Lord Shri Rama is recognized as the Supreme Being, and this guru-sishya lineage focuses on meditating upon Lord Shri Rama. In this lineage, renunciates contemplate upon the feet of Lord Shri Rama. It is non-other than Sri Sampradaya which starts from Sri Ram;
“The community (Sri Sampradaya) of wandering Ascetics (वैरागी संत) , well-known for their practice of renunciation, attained their ultimate repose by taking refuge in the feet of Lord Rama."
(Samveda Kundika Upanishad 1.1)
Vedas clearly shows the ancientness of Sri Sampradaya which starts from Lord Shri Ram, Sri Sampraday is a Vedic Sampraday whose lineage is deep rooted in Vedas. And it is also known as Sri Ramanand Sampraday as Lord Sri Rama Himself appeared as 22nd Acharya of this Vedic Sri Sampraday, “rāmānandaḥ svayaṃ rāmaḥ prādurbhūto mahītale-Agastya Saṃhitā". Than from that time onwards followers of Sri Sampraday are also called as “Rāmanandi", indicating their Pravartak Ācharya. For that reason this Sampradaya is sometimes called as Sri Ramananda Sampradaya.
Sri Ramananda is known as the cause of lifting the world. He is endowed with the characteristics of Acharya and is well versed in the Vedas and Vedanta. He is great Acharya of Sri Sampraday and is always devoted to the upliftment of the people. He got Shadakshar Mantra from his Guru Raghavananadacharya Ji.
(-Agastya Samhitā chapter 132, Shloka 13, 17)
And in that same lineage Maharishi Valmiki was initiated by Narad Muni;
Narad Muni gave initiation of Shadakshar Sri Ram Mantra and impression of Bow and Arrow to Maharishi Valmiki, later Maharishi Valmiki gave it to Luv and Kush than they both gave this impression of Bow and Arrow and initiation to other kings of Solar and Lunar Dynasty.
(-Sada Shiv Samhitā chapter 8)
As their is only a Single Sampraday which gives impression of Bow and Arrow, which is non-other than Sri Sampradaya which starts from Lord Shri Ram.
And after getting initiated with Sri Ram Shadakshar Mantra and with impression of Bow and Arrow, Maharishi Valmiki was eligible to know about the deepest truth through His Guru, i.e. Srimad Ramayana. As it said is above in Muktikopanishad-1.24 by Bhagvan Sri Ram to Sri Hanuman “गुरूपदिष्टमार्गेण ध्यायन्मद्गुणमव्ययम्”।- One should know my unchanging eternal form through meditation by the path given by Guru.
After hearing Ramayan summary of Ramayan from Narad Muni, Lord Brahmā appeared before Maharishi Valmiki and gave him boon that He will be able to see the whole story of Sri Ram through meditation, this is the same as said by Lord Ram above in Muktikopanishad-1.24 “गुरूपदिष्टमार्गेण ध्यायन्मद्गुणमव्ययम्”। One should know my unchanging eternal form through meditation by the path given by Guru.
(-Valmiki Ramayan Bālkand Canto 3 Verse 6-7)
It is clearly written in Valmiki's Ramayana that Maharishi Valmiki gained insight into the complete story of Lord Rama through meditation. This blessing was bestowed upon Maharishi Valmiki by Lord Brahma himself. Now the question arises, why did Lord Brahmā instruct Maharishi Valmiki to meditate? This is because Lord Brahma himself is initiated into the mantra of Lord Shri Rama, as evidenced by the Vedas;
Lord Sri Ram said: Those who take initiation (Disksha) of this Shadakshar mantra from you or from Sri Brahma ji will be liberated.
(Atharvaved Ram Uttar Tapniye Upanishad 3.15)
Also mentioned in Valmiki Samhita;
By hearing the Taraka Mantra, Hanumanji, with his pure intellect, disseminated it to Sri Brahmā. Consequently, Sage Vasishta, through the course of events, received the mantra from Sri Brahmā.
(-Narad Panchratra Valmiki Saṃhitā Chapter 2 Verse 35)
Lord Brahma is established as the fourth acharya in the Sri Sampradaya tradition. Therefore, he gave boon to Maharishi Valmiki to meditate through which he could perceive the complete character of Lord Shri Rama. This aligns with the guidance given by Lord Shri Rama to Hanuman in the Mukti Upanishad 1.24 which says, “One should know my unchanging eternal form through meditation by the path given by Guru.”
Infact for Lord Sri Ram, Sri Brahma Ji has written Ramayan of hundreds of millions verses in order to praise the glory of his Primeval Acharya, Sri Ram;
Valmiki's Ramayana, which narrates the story of Lord Rama, is considered supreme. It encompasses the divine narrative as narrated by Lord Brahma himself, extending into hundreds of millions of verses.
(Matsya Purana, Chapter 53, Verse 71)
Around with same meaning another shlok is also found in Skand Puran.
(Skandh Purana, Prabhas Khand, Chapter: 2, Verse 95)
And therefore when Maharshi Valmiki has already been initiated with Shri Ram Mantra than how can he be initiated with another mantra when he incarnates as Goswami Tulsidas! Mentioning it Bedi Madhav Das has clearly written in the ancient autobiography of Goswami Tulsidas, Mool Gosai Charitra;
That Narhari Swami who was the Guru of Goswami Tulsidas initiated Goswami Tulsidas with Shri Ram Mantra.
That's why when Goswami Tulsidas ji, in the form of Maharishi Valmiki, was once initiated by Shri Ram Mantra, then when he incarnated in Kalyug, it would be called a Mantra-Aparadh to initiated by any other mantra because it has been strictly banned by the scriptures to get any other Mantra if you have been initiated by Shri Ram Mantra. That's why Goswami Tulsidas ji cannot be initiated by any other mantra because Goswami Tulsidas ji is coming from the same unbroken tradition which is described in the Vedas which we know as Sri Sampradaya which starts from Parabrahma Shri Ram himself.
Therefore, it is appropriate to say that Valmiki ji received the Ramayana through a guru-sishya lineage from Brahma Ji. And Brahm ji got it from Hanuman ji as stated above and Hanuman Ji got it from SitaRam ji;
Salutations to the Lotus Eye Lord Shri Rama, with Sita ji who is situated in the center of the sun, who is the ultimate guru of Hanuman. Salutations to Lord Shri Rama, the embodiment of light, who is the ruler of the planets and stars. Salutations to the divine Lord Raghunath who is the highest bliss, the compassionate witness of all beings. Salutations to Lord Shri Rama, the embodiment of Brahman, who delighted Vishwamitra.
(-Agastya Samhita Chapter 25 Verse 18-20)
—The aforementioned verse describes Lord Shri Sitaram as the ultimate guru of Hanuman Ji. This is not just a statement but a part of the tradition of the Sri Sampradaya, as Hanuman Ji received initiation into the Shri Rama mantra from Sita Ji. He himself acknowledged this in the Veda and other scriptures also says it. Further in this lineage, at the 22nd position, appears the prominent figure Bhagavan Ramanandacharya Ji.
Lord Hanuman said— I have taken initiation (Mantra Diksha from Sita Ji) and I will fulfill the desires of those who engage in chanting mantras with daily devotion and remember Lord Rāma. I will surely grant the desired objects to the devotees of Śrī Raghunāth ji.
(Atharvaveda Ram Rahasya Upaniṣad 4/10-13)
After hearing the Taraka Mantra from Lord Shri Ram, Mother Janaki, who is the mother of the universe, recited it to Hanumanji, who is an ocean of virtues.
(-Valmiki Samhita Chapter 2 Shlok 34)
Exactly, due to being part of such an ancient lineage, Maharishi Valmiki could not have been initiated into another lineage. Therefore, when he appeared in the form of Tulsidas ji, he still received initiation within the same lineage in which he was originally initiated.
Indeed, no tradition originates on its own; at its core, it is established by the swayam Bhagvan;
"आप्रच्छन्नमथाम्नायः सम्प्रदायः क्षये क्षिया”—Amar Kosh 3.2.243. In it's commentary "Ramaashrami," Shri Bhanuji dikshita has written, "द्वेगुरुपरम्परारातसदुपदेशस्य" Traditionally receiving teachings through Guru. In the Nyayakosha, the meaning of the word "संप्रदायः" (sampradaya) is defined as "संप्रदायः- गुरुपरम्परागतः सदुपदेशः" which menas "Tradition passed down through guru-sishya lineage." And in the core of Sri samprday it's Lord Sri Sitaram himself who have initiated the Samprday and Bhagavan Ramanandacharya served as one of its prominent proponents. Even before Bhagavan Ramanandacharya, this tradition was already existing in an unbroken manner. After him as well, this tradition continues to flourish. This lineage will persist indefinitely since it originates from Shri Janaki Devi herself.
And Swami Tulsidas ji himself is initiated into the Sri Ramanand Sampradaya, which is evident from the writings in his works;
My guru has taught me the practice of singing praises to Lord Rama, and I find this path akin to the Royal Road (राज मार्ग) that I truly enjoy.
(-Sri Tulsidas Vinay Patrik Pada 173)
And what is that Royal Road? It's nothing but the Path or the lineage of Sri Sampraday which starts from Sri SitaRam and whose Adya-Acharya is itself Sri Hanuman ji;
(-Sada Shiv Samhitā ch 8)
Hence, Tulsidas ji is stating that he loves the path his guru has taught him, which is the Raj-Marg. He is clearly expressing that he follows the same lineage, the same tradition, which is rooted in Lord Shri Sita-Rama.
Therefore Muktikopanishd 1.24 Bhagvan Sri Ram has specially used the term “Mārg provided by the Guru” denoting the eternal Path or lineage of Sri Sampraday.
